6 Cups all purpose flour -- sifted then -- measured
4 1/2 Cups granulated sugar
3 3/4 Teaspoons baking soda
3 Teaspoons baking powder
9 Tablespoons instant nonfat dry milk solids
2 Cups vegetable shortening -- preferable butter -- flavor Crisco
Sift flour, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder together in a large bowl; add dry milk solids and mix thoroughly. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until the consistency of corn meal. Store mix in a container with a tight-fitting lid.
Makes 14 1/2 cups, enough for 3 two-layer cakes or up to 72 cupcakes.
